Building family business in Sandwich
Located within the Discovery Park Enterprise Zone in Sandwich is a family business at the forefront of a revolution in home construction. From its purpose-built £3 million plant, OFP Timber Frame designs and manufactures high-quality timber framed solutions for homes, schools and healthcare.
The company produces over 15 units a week with a new house leaving the factory every three-and-a-half hours. OFP supplies timber framed homes to some of the leading house builders in the south of England.
OFP also designs and manufactures bespoke homes, including a project for prototype luxury tree houses at Center Parcs.
The company currently employs over 60 local people, including five apprentices, and has a turnover of £8 million.
OFP’s £3m purpose-built factory sits on the site of the former Pfizer UK HQ. With strong environmental credentials, the company uses only FSC/PEFC certified wood, and is self-sufficient for heat and power. Its own bio-mass boiler is fuelled by woodchip pellets produced as a by-product of the manufacturing.
A sister company, Discovery Stairs, based on the Sandwich Industrial Estate specialises in the manufacture of wooden staircases. Established in November 2017, its order book includes over 500 flights of stairs!
Founder and managing director, Alastair Narraway, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the business we’ve built in Sandwich. It’s proven to be the perfect base for us to develop our business and to meet the growing need for more house building in the south east.
“Both my sons are working for the business too, and we’re committed to developing local skills with apprenticeships and training.”
