Sandwich "Open" for Business

The local economy of Sandwich, and the wider Dover district, is set for a significant boost over the next two years with new investment at Discovery Park, and the return of The Open golf championship to the Royal St George’s Golf Club in 2020.

Speaking at a community forum in Sandwich, Toby Hunter, CEO of Discovery Park, outlined the future plans.

“Discovery Park is a national asset and one of the best equipped life sciences facilities in Europe.  We’ve got exciting plans to reconfigure and refurbish space to meet the needs of new businesses relocating to Sandwich.

"This includes Building 500, the biggest building on the site, and in which there is strong tenant interest.  Our plans for this building include creating a new restaurant in the centre of the building to act as a hub and meeting space.

The wider mixed-use plans for the Discovery Park site include residential and commercial development with a focus on building on the sire's legacy as a global hub for science and innovation, and a vital contributor to teh regional and UK economy."

“We already have planning permission for 500 new homes and we’’ll be submitting a planning application to Dover District Council later this year for new commercial development, including expanding our science offer and providing additional facilities, including a hotel and retail," said Toby.

The plans for a new hotel are well-timed with Sandwich due to host the 149th Open Golf Championships which returns to the Royal St George’s Golf Club from 12-19 July 2020.  Mark Batten from the organising committee of the The Open 2020, also spoke at the community forum.

“We want The Open to be a great visitor experience and are working closely with Dover District Council and Kent County Council to realise the full economic and tourism benefits of hosting such a prestigious sporting event.

“2020 will be the fifteenth time that Royal St George’s has hosted The Open with over 182,000 people coming to the championships the last time it was held in Sandwich in 2011.  Research by the R&A has shown that 68% of spectators return to the area on short breaks.”

Many local businesses are already gearing up for the increased trade that The Open brings to the area.  The Port of Dover has recently returned from the Seatrade Cruise Global exhibition in Miami where it was promoting The Open to the world’s cruise lines, and the easy connections between the port and Sandwich.

Discovery Park is looking forward to playing its part too in supporting an event that will further Sandwich to the world's attention.

England Golf has announced that Royal St George’s will also host the European Men’s Team Championship in 2022.
