Dover Skills Fair

Dover’s business voice backs skills drive

Dover Business Forum, a group of the district’s larger companies has identified recruiting skilled employees as the most important issue facing large companies across the district.

As a result its 20 key members are backing the Dover Skills Fair being held on Thursday 19 November.

Senior managers involved in skills, training and career development are representing almost 40 local and national organisations, of which 10 are Forum members, at the Dover Skills Fair.

The Forum attendees include Bakkavor - Tilmanstone Salads, Discovery Park, East Kent College, Invest in Dover, Leaf Hotels Group, Megger, P&O Ferries, Port of Dover and Viking Recruitment.

Matthew Jaenicke, Managing Director of Viking Recruitment said: “These are very exciting times for Dover and it is vital that our young people know there are so many rewarding career opportunities on offer in local businesses throughout the district.

“The Forum is backing the Skills4Dover initiative and hopes other businesses will support it as a way of improving the local economy by investing in the skills of our young people.”

Skills4Dover has been jointly developed by East Kent College and Invest in Dover.

Since East Kent College took over responsibility for K College’s former Dover Campus, nearly £3m has been invested in improving training facilities to provide young people with the skills they need, including engineering and building services (plumbing and electrical), as well as automotive, travel, tourism and hospitality, computing, and hairdressing.  The college has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Port of Dover to match local skills with future employment there.

Paul Sayers, Executive Director at East Kent College, and a member of the Forum, said: “It is great to see so many significant employers stepping forward to showcase the career opportunities on offer here in Dover, whether in tourism and leisure, port and maritime industries, construction, engineering, logistics, or life sciences and emerging technologies.”

The Dover Skills Fair will be held at the Dover Town Hall on Thursday 19 November between noon and 6pm.
