Saga's 'Spirit of Discovery' ready to float as Dover prepares for naming
The latest picture of one of the most hotly anticipated new cruise ships of the year has been released by shipbuilder, Meyer Werft. Saga's Spirit of Discovery is set to be named in Dover on Friday, 5 July, heralding a new era in luxury boutique cruising for Saga which has operated cruise holidays from Dover for over 20 years.
The 58,250gt ship is in the final stages of construction and will be floated out for the first time in the coming months as she leaves Meyer Werft's covered building dock in Papenburg, Germany and prepares to transit the River Ems for sea trials.
Spirit of Discovery will set sail on her inaugural cruise from Dover on Wednesday, 10 July, starting a series of 11 cruises from Dover in its maiden season from the Kent port, the busiest cruise terminal in the south east of England. The Port of Dover will welcome 131 cruise calls from 19 cruise lines in 2019.
A sistership, Spirit of Adventure, joins the Saga Cruises fleet in August 2020, also sailing from Dover.
Meanwhile, the Port of Dover is currently gearing up to exhibit at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami from 8-11 April, where it will showcase the Dover Western Docks Revival which has added a new multi-purpose berth capable of docking cruise ships up to 350m in length.
